Ego State Therapy
We all have different parts or aspects to our personality. This is completely normal.
For example, you may have a lazy part, an ambitious part, a fun-loving part and a fearful part. Usually we are aware of our different parts and can easily resolve any conflict. For example, your lazy part might want to stay in bed in the morning but your healthy part might want to get up and go for a walk. If its raining, you may decide in favour of your lazy part. We are all constantly grappling with our different parts in our daily lives.
If the conflict between the different parts of your personality is not so easily resolved, you may find yourself constantly battling with yourself. You may feel frustrated if you keep making decisions in favour of parts that feel self-sabotaging or self- destructive. Fearful parts may want to withdraw from the world so that they can feel safe. This can feel like you are losing control of your life or even your mind.
Prolonged trauma can cause different parts of your personality to feel quite separate and conflicted. If you have suffered trauma during childhood, there can also be parts of you that are still traumatised, even if the trauma occured a long time ago. These traumatized parts might be much younger parts. You may or may not be aware of the young traumatized parts of yourself. Therapy helps you to get to know the different parts of yourself and understand what they need to heal, flourish and work together. When this happens, you feel more whole and gain more control over your life.
Ego State Therapy can be integrated with EMDR for effective treatment of PTSD, Complex Trauma and Dissociative Disorders.
